Welcome to Year 2
Mrs J Seller & Mrs P Scott
Dear Parent/Guardian
Welcome back to a new term after an enjoyable Christmas break.
This term should be exciting for the children as we explore:
· Healthy Living and Forces in Science
· Famous people and Events in History
· Wheeled vehicles in Design & Technology
· Collage and drawing in Art
· Aspects of Christian and Jewish Faiths in Religious Education
· Traditional story telling and writing in Literacy (please come and see me if you would like extra information on encouraging your child to tell stories)
· The creation of multimodal texts in ICT that combine movement, images, sound and writing.
· Achieving goals in Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning.
Just a quick reminder, children do require a P.E. kit in school on a daily basis. A pair of track suit trousers may be more suitable for cold weather.
Homework will continue weekly and will include some of the following:
As your child is still developing his/her reading skills, it is important that he/she reads daily. Your child will be sent home with a book to read and a comment will need to be written in their reading journal about how they are progressing.
I would like to thank all of those parents who provided help or costumes for the school production – it was fantastic!
Mrs Scott is looking forward to teaching Class 2 every Friday. Finally, if you have any queries, however small, please speak to Mrs Scott, myself or the office to ensure your queries are dealt with – thank you.
Happy New Year

Equipment
Your child will need the following labelled items in school daily:
-
A Book Bag and
Home School Link Book -
A PE kit - plimsolls or trainers, dark shorts, plain white t-shirt, dark tracksuit bottoms and white socks.
-
An art shirt (items 2 & 3 to be hung on child's peg)
-
Water bottle to be kept in the classroom and taken home at the end of the day. Please ensure the lids can be securely tightened to avoid spillages, which can be dangerous.
Homework
Homework is an integral feature of classroom life that supports, consolidates and extends upon what your child learns in the classroom. Research demonstrates that continued support at home improves achievement. The following homework will normally be given weekly.
What can you do to help?
o Play the maths game with your child and write a comment in their homework book. This helps us to monitor the effectiveness of each game and suitability for the age group. Given Thursday and return by next Thursday.
o Spellings- listen to your child read the words; ask child for spelling pattern; child to copy words in joined writing if able; fold sheet and read spellings to child and they write from memory. Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check.
o Extra homework will be given occasionally, read with your child to ensure they understand the task.
Behaviour
Each class has an agreed set of rules at the beginning of term for everybody to follow. A detailed reward system is in place for following this system involving certificates, praise and in some cases letters to parents. If the rules are not followed there are a set of consequences for all children that are detailed in each class and range from a simple warning, to spending some of playtime reflecting on behaviour.
Achievements
We are keen to celebrate all of the children's achievements and this includes hobbies outside of school. Please encourage your child to show us their achievements.
Reading
As your child is still developing his/her reading skills, it is important that they read daily, even for a short time. Your child can select a book to read at home which needs to be brought to school each day. The home/school link book used in Class 1 will be continued to record how often your child reads and comments relating to progress. I should appreciate it if you would record the date, title of the book and print your name as this enables a consistent record of the books the child has read, avoiding duplications. I will begin to encourage the children to change their own books on the understanding that they keep me informed.
Communication
Newsletters should be sent home fortnightly that will include important information about forthcoming school events and dates. Letters and permission slips for trips and events are also sent home via your childs book bag. Please check daily and any money/returned slips should be sealed in a named envelope.
During the course of the school year it is inevitable that I will talk to you about your child and my usual approach is directly after school in the playground, in my classroom or via a later appointment. If I am unable to do this I will contact you via telephone. I prefer to discuss concerns after school as I am immediately responsible for a class of children in the morning and pressed for time. If however, you have any urgent concerns they must be discussed with the class teacher directly, to ensure that they will be dealt with.
Reports
There will be 3 reports in the school academic year, the first of which should be received by the beginning of November. This will be a brief overview of settling in and any issues. The second report will be towards the end of February 2007 detailing progress and attainment with the third following in July.
Classroom Help
The children really enjoy parents helping in the classroom whether it is hearing children read or helping to prepare an art lesson. If you would like to help just let me know.
General
I am looking forward to the year ahead as I am in a privileged position of knowing about all the exciting and stimulating experiences we have in store for the children. We will work hard throughout the year but most importantly we will have fun and enjoy learning. I am keen to promote independence within the classroom, encouraging the children to organise and make their own decisions regarding daily work and routines.

Our Trip To Thornham
Year 2 had a special day at Thornham Field Centre. The children walked approx. 12,000 steps during the day moving between activities. These included map reading to find symbols; searching for objects in the secret garden and problem solving skills in the forest during the afternoon.
